The problem

Gum leaves are long, tough and slow to break down, so they pack in tight. On this roof they had filled the gutters all the way round.

The valleys were worse. A roof valley is where two roof slopes meet, and it carries water from both. Here it was filled from top to bottom.

With the downpipes covered too, water had nowhere to go. In a storm it backs up the valley and can push under the tiles and into the ceiling.
